Team 7-Eleven Philippines Reign in Da Nang International Marathon 2017

Da Nang Vietnam, August 6, 2017 – This year’s Da Nang International Marathon was successfully concluded this morning in Danang, Vietnam with six Filipino runners, representing Team 7-Eleven Philippines, taking podium spots in the full marathon and half-marathon races .

Lany Cardona of Pangasinan cruised through the 42km race to land as the champion of the women’s division, finishing the course in 03:27:26 while Rafael Pescos of Cebu finished second in the men’s division with a finish time of 02:40:06. Richard Salano, a member of the Philippine Army secured the third spot in the podium of the 21km race with a finish time of 1:20:36 while the trio of Jho-An Banayag-Villarma (01:31:53), Nhe-Ann Barcena (01:37:08) and Ruffa Sorongon (01:37:38) swept the first, second and third spots of the 21km women’s category.

Meanwhile, Lizane Abella (4:20:19) and Azlan Pagay (3:02:06) took the Top 1 honors in their respective age group for the 42km and Kennechie Lorbes (1:49:10) took Top 5 for his Age Group in the 21km race.

“Masaya kami kasi ang 7-Eleven ay walang sawa na pinadadala kami sa ganitong international race.” said Lany Cardona who together with Rafael Pescos were given a slot to race in the Shonan International Marathon happening on December in Kanagawa, Japan with all expenses paid, as part of their prize for winning in the 42km category of this race.

Nine Filipino runners participated in this morning’s race, four of them in the full marathon while five in the half-marathon – a fulfillment of the commitment given by Philippine Seven Corporation (7-Eleven Philippines) to the top 3 (male and female) marathon and full marathon winners of the 7-Eleven Run that was held in the Filinvest City, Alabang last February.

According to Project Head Ms. Michelle Saludes, “We at 7-Eleven want to give Filipino runners not part of the Philippine Team the opportunity to showcase their abilities and be recognized in an international competition.”

Local and foreign participants coming from 50 countries, competed in the Da Nang International Marathon 2017 where the route brought the experience of running through Da Nang’s beautiful coastline passing the bridges across the poetic Han’s river in the middle of the city during sunrise.

This is the fifth year that 7-Eleven Philippines has brought Filipino runners to an international race giving them full support from taking care of all expenses, pocket money and with the help of sponsor Asics Tiger, a complete race suit.

“We will continue to encourage runners who aspire to represent the country in an international competition through the 7-Eleven Run Series which we are planning to expand by having another race in Cebu before the year ends and which will serve as a qualifying race to the 7-Eleven Run happening in Manila next year.” shared Mr. Jose Ang Jr., General Merchandise Division Head.

The participation of Filipino runners was made possible through the effort of Philippine Seven Corporation together with the support of sponsors Safeguard, Selecta Ice Cream, Pocari Sweat, Del Monte, Nature’s Spring, Summit Water, Dole Pineapple, Powerade, Solar Sports, CNN Philippines, Skyway, Filinvest and Asics.

Jomary Torres happy to compete alongside Kelly, Pacio in Macao

Filipina fighter Jomary Torres sees it as a privilege to be fighting side-by-side with fellow homegrown martial artists on the undercard of ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in Macao. China on Saturday, August 5.

Torres, who squares off with rising Thai superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige on the aforementioned card, relishes the opportunity to represent the Philippines alongside combat veteran Eric Kelly as well as one-time flyweight world title challenger Joshua “The Passion” Pacio.

“I am very happy because all of us are representing the Philippines and not against each other. This is good. I hope all of us will win on fight night,” she said.

Kelly locks horns with former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu “No Face” Boku, while Pacio looks to get another shot at Yoshitaka Naito’s gold-plated strap as he crosses paths with seasoned Japanese stalwart Hayato Suzuki in a three-round strawweight encounter.

“We get to represent the country. It’s really an honor and a privilege. We are one team in Macao. We are all hoping for a clean sweep,” Torres stated.

Torres, who holds a fledgling professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record of 1-0, is not expecting to be other competitor’s footstool to move up in the rankings as she intends to walk out with the victory in her ONE Championship debut.

“It’s my first time to compete in ONE Championship. I am honored and blessed to be in this top-notch organization, which is widely considered as the frontrunner of MMA in the region. Of course, I am aiming to get a big win. I’ve worked hard just to make it here. I won’t waste this opportunity,” she claimed.

Torres is a talented Filipino prospect who trains out of the Wushu-savvy Catalan Fighting System gym.

Moreover, Torres had her lone match in August 2016 at a local Filipino MMA event, where she took a convincing unanimous decision triumph.

However, Torres is fully aware that having her hand raised against a well-rounded MMA competitor like Ishige will be a tough task.

“I am prepared for this fight. Every fight is a challenge for me. But I welcome all challenges. Bring it on,” she expressed.

ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS is set to take place at the glamorous Cotai Arena of The Venetian Macao.

Joshua Pacio happy to be back in Macao, vows to showcase stellar performance in return

Filipino standout Joshua “The Passion” Pacio had a memorable trip to Macao a year ago when he competed at ONE Championship’s inaugural live event in the Chinese suburb known as “Oyster City.”

The 21-year-old native of Baguio City, Benguet competed on the undercard of ONE: HEROES OF THE WORLD, where he defeated gritty Thai grappler Kritsada Kongsrichai by way of first-round submission.

Proving that Team Lakay fighters are not isolated in the striking department, Pacio effortlessly took Kongsrichai down to the mat and fastened a rear-naked choke to force his Thai foe to tap at the 4:37 mark of the first round.

Pacio will be setting foot on Macao soil once again as he is set to compete on the undercard of ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, which takes place at the glamorous Cotai Arena of The Venetian Macao.

Now using the moniker “The Passion” due to his ardent desire to improve each day as a martial artist, Pacio is slated to test his mettle with Japanese newcomer Hayato Suzuki.

Pacio did not mince words about his excitement to strut his wares in Macao, which is also home to thousands of overseas Filipino workers.

“I love fighting in Macao. The venue is so awesome. It’s truly world-class. Furthermore, there are a lot of Filipinos living and working there. Whenever I compete there, it feels like I am fighting back home. The energy is palpable. I can’t wait to be back,” he said.

A member of the famed Team Lakay, Pacio is one of the most talented strawweights that has been ever produced by the flourishing mixed martial arts (MMA) scene in the Philippines.

In addition, Pacio is a Wushu Sanshou specialist with a solid grappling repertoire. All but one of his career victories have come by spectacular finish, including five wins by submission and three wins by knockout.

However, Pacio has a taller order in his new assignment as a ONE Championship athlete as he takes on Suzuki.

Suzuki owns a remarkable MMA record of 16-0-2 and is known as a well-rounded warrior who has the ability to stop his foes with his heavy hands and technical grappling skills.

Out of 16 career wins, Suzuki has finished 11 of his opponents, including six by submission and five by knockout.

“It’s going to be an action-packed fight. I can’t be complacent. Moreover, I have to be two steps or three steps ahead of him,” Pacio said about his scheduled three-round strawweight clash against Suzuki.

Pacio promises a new and improved version of himself when he steps inside the ONE Championship cage against Suzuki.

“There is always a room for improvement. Although I won against Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke last March, there is still an urgency to improve my skills and arsenal further after the fight. This time, we enhanced timing and precision. We added speed as well as proper executions of game plan,” he shared.

With a tough foe in front of him at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, Pacio is motivated to mark the first blemish in Suzuki’s immaculate MMA record.

“He’s never been knocked out. He’s never been submitted. He’s undefeated. This is MMA. Anything can happen,” he conveyed.

“My skills versus his skills will be incredible. This will be one of the fights that will be remembered because he will showcase his skills and I will showcase mine, so you had better watch it,” Pacio ended.

PLTD the country’s leading telecoms and digital services continues to champion digital literacy among public school teachers and students with its PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program. Now on its 14th year, the company’s flagship CSR program has produced over 25,000 graduates from far-flung communities across the country.

“The PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program is a digital enabler aimed at addressing today’s educational needs within the changing times. This evolved into being the biggest and most accomplished free digital literacy training and education program that the country has ever seen,” said PLDT Community Relations Division Head Evelyn Del Rosario.

In partnership with the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Intel Philippines and the Local Government Units (LGUs), this year’s successful Infoteach Outreach Program culminated in a grand showdown of computer knowledge supremacy in an event called the PLDT Home Fibr Broadband Quiz.

The Quiz, divided into two categories (Teachers and Students), awarded P45,000 in cash to the winning Grand Champion in the Students category, and P40,000 for the Grand Champion in the Teachers Category. Four sets of computer units were also awarded to the school of the Grand Champions as part of the prizes.

It has three levels: the Division Level in which the participating schools competed to determine the Division Champion; Regional Level in which the Division Champions competed to determine the Top 4, who participated in the National Level.

Life-long digital learning

Hailing from Juan Pamplona National High School in Tabuelan, Cebu, Rose Pauline Cotejo emerged as the Grand Champion of the 9th PLDT Home Fibr Broadband Quiz. Cotejo, who has been an educator for eight months, expressed was honored to take her teaching capabilities to be at par with the global digitization. “Through PLDT’s strong commitment in providing digital literacy to teachers, I can definitely say that, as life-long learners, we would be able to compete in this fast-paced world,” she said.

Power duo Geline Lontoc and Ven Benedick Nera bested three other pairs in the Student category and was hailed as the Grand Champions. Lontoc, 18, emphasized how many technological breakthroughs can pave way for change. “Change is inevitable, as they say. And the world is continuously changing. The major change that we can see and notice is the development of technology, and the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program aids us so we can adapt to these changes,” Lontoc said.

Pursuing the digital path

As PLDT embraces a culture of transformation, many of its corporate social action programs are pursuing an increasingly digital tack. In line with this, it continues to provide educational opportunities that are geared towards shaping a digital mindset. Through this, it cultivates the lifestyle of every Filipino – creating bigger opportunities to learn and truly understand digital literacy.

Anchored on becoming digital citizens, the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program trains both teachers and students to become globally competitive. The Program turns into a learning platform that is centered on career-defining opportunities that truly paves the digital path.

Cirque du Soleil’s latest touring show inspired from James Cameron’s blockbuster hit Avatar entitled Toruk — The First Flight, had indeed made its initial flight here in Manila last night (Friday , 23 June 2017) at Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City. The show is a true visual feast; it has a moving choreography and one of the most creative sets I’ve seen.

From my seat, the stage was really mesmerizing which I think is an important component of any show. The floor, which took almost 3/4 of the arena’s surface area, had different levels that created a detailed 3D environment. On top hangs a ring-shaped rig made to look like intertwined branches, and at the back of the performance area was a huge screen wall and tree trunk structures. Different visuals projected onto the floor and back wall, creating entirely new settings for the story to journey through. From the stony caverns, to the neon-floral forests, to floating rocks, dynamic rivers, waterfalls, and oceans no two scenes felt the same despite the same basic stage structure. Cirque never failed to immerse their guests to the Na’vis world.

The tree trunks at the back opened and closed in massive preset movements and the large ring at the front above head would shape-shift as well, it sometimes carry some vines, and transforms itself to a new set piece in every scene. The different puppets used are also impressive, the flying birds, the giant Austrapedes, the running scary beasts, and the roaring monsters all adding a feel to the temporary Pandora. A great touch was the greenery that would pop up from trap doors around the main circular stage — these details showed the how keen attention paid to the intricacy of the set design. From up close, all of the visuals were really striking.

Another thing that did pay to be close to the stage for were the actors, gymnasts, acrobats and the puppeteers. . If the intricate detail of the set was impressive, the minute the movements and costuming of each performer was astounding. The Na’vi actors, dressed in tight blue costumes (which accentuated their muscles and super hot hot body!) each looked unique and distinct from one another, and moved in ways that made you forget they were human ( but elements of desire! Hahahahaha! Kidding! )— when they crawl, leap, flip, and even climb around the set. The different characters and clans were marked with individual hair styles, clothing/ accessories, and behaviors.

They even launched its first-of-its-kind app Cirque du Soleil app for TORUK- The First Flight that enhance the overall show experience and enable users who has the app to be part of the show before, during, and after the performance.

So what are you waiting for? Invite everyone to see this amazing show! Sulit na Sulit Men! Get your ticket now through or Ticket price ranges from Php 1,500 to Php 7,368. Show is from June 23 – July 2.
